Pekin Duck

They are also known as American Pekin duck, or Long Island duck. Pekin is a dual purpose breed of domestic duck used primarily for egg and meat production. Fully mature adult Pekin ducks weigh between 3.6 and 5 kilograms in captivity. But properly grown Pekin duck are ready for processing at 7 weeks (2.5kgs). An adult Pekin will lay an average of 200 eggs per year.

Pekin ducks are less “broody” than other ducks meaning they will incubate eggs less frequently and they are more likely to abandon their nest before hatching. Hens can be used to sit on the duck eggs, Ziwani Poultry do offer incubation service – duck eggs are incubated at a cost of Khs28 per eggs.

Their feathers are white, sometimes with a yellowish tinge. They have orange/pink bills (beaks) and orange legs.

 

 

Pekin Ducks are quite common in Asia. These ducks have become very popular to farm as they grow quite quickly, are hardy, highly fertile and one of the largest size ducks. Pekin are friendly calm ducks that are quite easy to train.  However, they are one of the noisiest breeds to keep especially the female.

History

Pekin were bred from the mallard in China. The ancestors of those ducks originated from the canals which linked waterways in Nanjing and originally had small bodies and black feathers. With the relocation of the Chinese capital to Beijing. Supply barge traffic increased in the area which would often spill grain on which the ducks fed. Over time, the ducks slowly increased in size and grew white feathers. By the Five Dynasties (10th-century), the new breed of duck had been domesticated by Chinese farmers.

The Pekin duck is the most popular commercial duck breed around the world. A Small number were imported to Long Island from China in 1873, that’s why the ducks are sometimes referred to as “Long Island duck”.

Our Pekin are the best in the duck meat industry, they reach 2.5kgs in 7 weeks (49 days). With the increase in Asians (Chinese, Indians, Koreans, Malaysian) the demand for duck meat has increased tremendously. Duck meat sells from ksh450 per Kg. We sell all over over East Africa. Farmers can buy as day or week old and rear them.
